Are you dreaming of wearable art but don’t know how to start making it? Do you have larger sculptural goals? Something in between? The goal of these classes is to help students plan out the path of learning that works best for them and their visions, while still teaching them important basics of technique and design. Whether you just want to tinker and get the hang of basic skills to make a few projects, or if you plan to put together your own studio and dive head first in to the world of metalsmithing, working with me is a great way to get initial experience and advice, and to experiment with what feels best for you.
This is a unique opportunity to learn basic techniques of metalworking affordably, and with full attention from the instructor. It’s also a great way to get inspired! The best way to learn anything is in a hands-on, one:one teacher:student environment. Having studied with several master metalsmiths in just that way, I came to understand the value of such learning processes. My goal is to help you get excited about the possibilities of using the materials and tools of the trade in order to realize your creative visions in metal.
Techniques involve basic soldering and fabrication techniques such as piercing, stone setting and hammering. Material focus will be on non-ferrous metals (silver, gold, brass, bronze, copper), though basic welding is also an option. Learning the basics is important for any vision in metalsmithing, however the special thing about my classes are that we tailor your lessons to YOUR desires and interests.
Classes take place at my studio at the Big Art Labs in Downtown Los Angeles. Classes are $125 for 3 hours, and students should expect to take several in order to complete projects, grasp basic consepts and practice skills. If you are an advanced student and would like to block studio hours to use the tools and equipment for projects from class or on your own, studio hours can be booked for $20 after 1-2 completed 3 hour lessons.
