Cocoons… they are the place of Metamorphosis, of regeneration, of growth. Shira has explored the concept of Cocoon through her artwork for many years, and here are a few of the results. From 7′ interactive sculptures in the Nevada desert to gallery exhibitions in Oregon, these pieces have traveled and adorned places with shadows and light.
Made with Shira’s signature style she calls “Steel Lace”, this work is begun by cutting thousands of holes in sheets of steel with a hand-held oxy-acetylene cutting torch. Those sheets are then cut into smaller pieces, and the thin, perforated steel becomes malleable, pliable even by hand. Shira then forms those pieces and mig welds them back together. The result is a surface that practically breathes, and a space that allows for magnificent plays of light.
Sculptures have been made and then deconstructed and recycled. Pieces of each large sculpture have even become wearable…
